(Fredericton) May 26, 2010 - The Oromocto and Area Health Care Advisory Committee, Horizon Health Network and the Department of Health will be conducting a Community Health Needs Assessment in order to assist residents in Oromocto and the surrounding communities in identifying the health status of its population and its overall health needs.
"Our government is focused on improving opportunities for quality health-care services at the community level," said Acting Health Minister Greg Byrne. "This initiative will provide Oromocto-area residents an opportunity to discuss their primary healthcare needs and provide input about health services in their region."
The primary goal of the Needs Assessment is to engage community members to provide input about health care services in the region. The process is also designed to enhance participation from family, community and various sectors (health, education, justice and government).
"The health and wellness of all our communities in Horizon Health Network is extremely important to us," said Donald J. Peters, President and CEO of Horizon Health Network. "This assessment will provide an opportunity for positive collaboration with the residents of the Oromocto area. This assessment will provide us with information on how we can better align the provision of health services with the community's resources and health and well-being concerns," added Peters.
The Oromocto and Area Health Care Advisory Committee was established to oversee the Needs Assessment process and Dr. Verlé Harrop has been hired to lead the initiative. Dr. Harrop will be holding a series of focus groups, talking to key persons in the communities as well as hosting a Town Hall Meeting.
The Town Hall Meeting is scheduled for May 27, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the Oromocto High School Teaching Theatre, 25 MacKenzie Avenue, Oromocto, NB.
The Advisory Committee will work closely with Dr. Harrop to determine how the Oromocto and surrounding area's health and well-being needs can be met. A final report is slated to be released in the Fall, 2010.
