(Moncton, N.B.) Nov. 4, 2009 - The Katherine Wright Centre in Moncton is officially opening with its new name, location, testing equipment and services that will help improve patient health in the region.
The centre now offers three core services: breast screening; breast health services; and colposcopy.
A breast health clinic and colposcopy clinic will allow for further investigation into breast and cervical cancer. The breast health clinic provides services to women and men of all ages who have breast problems or signs and symptoms of breast cancer. The colposcopy clinic is for women with an abnormal pap smear test. An examination is done using a microscope to identify the area from which the abnormal cells have originated.
The centre, which was formerly known as the Katherine Wright Family Wellness Centre, moved in July from its old location on Reade Street to the Professional Arts Building on 100 Arden St. The move was made to accommodate two new, state-of-the-art digital mammography units.
The units were purchased through a partnership between The Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation and the Department of Health. In 2008, the Foundation raised $1.1 million to help buy three units, one of which was placed in The Moncton Hospital Medical Imaging Department, while the province contributed $846,000 in funding towards the equipment.. The addition of these units will allow more women to be screened for breast cancer and will significantly reduce wait times.
"I would like to congratulate the Katherine Wright Center on their official opening. The new digital mammography units will allow for the expansion of breast cancer screening services, increase patient access, reduce wait times and improve image quality" said Schryer. "To fight breast cancer, we must have a high-quality health-care system equipped to respond to the needs of those battling this disease."
Donald J. Peters, President and CEO of the Horizon Health Network , praised the team at the centre and congratulated them on providing new, improved services to the public.
"With the new additions to the Katherine Wright Centre, both women and men in the region will receive the highest possible level of care," Peters said. "Breast screening, matched with the breast health clinic and new colposcopy testing, will ensure patients detect any abnormalities early on and get the best treatment possible."
"I look forward to the continuing improvements such as this to health care delivery in the province of New Brunswick, and for the patients we serve in the Moncton Zone."

The Katherine Wright Centre has officially launched at its new location in the Professional Arts Building on 100 Arden St.
The centre is an evolution of the former Katherine Wright Family Wellness Centre, which opened its doors in December 1995 as a breast screening clinic for women in the region.
The goal of the Katherine Wright Centre is to achieve excellence in providing and promoting services that improve the quality of life to women in the community.
The new centre employs four medical radiation technologists who are certified to perform breast screening mammograms, along with two clerks who help administer the screening services.
With the help of Friends of the Moncton Hospital Foundation's Mammography Matters campaign and funds from the Department of Health, the centre has obtained two digital mammography systems. A third system for diagnostic mammography was also purchased for the medical imaging department.
The breast screening service at the KWC is a preventative medicine program for women 50 and over, with the aim to find breast cancer at an early stage, often before there are any symptoms. This is done by taking an x-ray of each breast (a mammogram). Early detection may often mean simpler and more successful treatment.
The service is provided to women from ages 50 to 69 every two years without a physician referral.
Women requiring a screening mammogram on an annual basis, or who are outside of this age bracket, must be referred by their physician.
In the Moncton zone, more than 7,000 women receive breast screening services yearly basis.
While many women are participating, with about 60 per cent getting the exams, the health network is still working to increase the rate.
In addition to breast screening, the Katherine Wright Centre offers a breast health clinic and colposcopy clinic. The breast health clinic provides services to women and men of all ages who have breast problems or signs and symptoms of breast cancer. The colposcopy clinic is for women with an abnormal pap smear test. An examination is done using a microscope to identify the area from which the abnormal cells have originated.
The centre is named in honour of Katherine Wright, a distinguished nurse whose career in the Moncton area spanned four decades. Wright spent all but one year of her career at The Moncton Hospital, but her commitment to patients and her advocacy regarding their right to quality care has been impacted health-care facilities throughout Canada.
Wright's leadership skills led to her promotion from staff nurse to Assistant Head Nurse within one year of her graduation. In 1951, she became an instructor at The Moncton Hospital School of Nursing and two years later she was appointed Director of the School of Nursing. She held that position until the school closed in 1975. Wright led the hospital's nursing services from 1953 to 1967, when she was appointed assistant executive director.
Following her retirement from The Moncton Hospital, the Board of Trustees recognized her contribution by establishing the Katherine Wright Wellness Centre.
