(Fredericton) September 24, 2009 - Dr. Marcel Martin, a general and trauma surgeon from Sherbrooke, Quebec, has recently begun his work as Medical Director of the new Provincial Trauma Program.
"It is with great pleasure that I welcome Dr. Marcel Martin, who has accepted the position of Medical Director for the new Provincial Trauma Program," said Donald J. Peters, President and CEO of Regional Health Authority B (RHA B).
"Dr. Martin will collaborate with both RHA A and B to provide the highest quality, coordinated trauma system to the people of New Brunswick. He will certainly be an asset to the healthcare system and the patients we serve."
Hiring Dr. Martin is a concrete step towards the establishment of a provincewide trauma network. A trauma advisory committee and seven sub-committees made up of nearly 100 health workers and officials from across the province have been working to design the network, as well as to determine what further steps will need to be taken to ensure its establishment continues to progress.
"I am so pleased to welcome Dr. Martin to New Brunswick. Having him here will help us achieve a coordinated and integrated system that will provide high quality care to New Brunswickers, no matter where they live," said Health Minister Mary Schryer. "We will start work to build the trauma system as quickly as possible."
Dr. Dennis Furlong, the chair of the trauma advisory committee, said that the committee has accomplished much over the last 20 months.
"We now have a blueprint for the provincial trauma network which will soon be presented to the Minister," said Furlong. "While considerable progress has been made, the process will still take time, patience, and cooperation from all those involved as the system is constructed."
Furlong said the construction of the trauma system will happen under the direction of Dr. Martin.
With education in surgical intensive care and trauma, Dr. Martin has many years of experience in the care of trauma and critically ill patients. He has previously served as the Director of the Critical Care Program & Traumatology at the Centre de santé universitaire de l'Estrie, the major teaching hospital in Sherbrooke, as well as a professor in the Department of Surgery at the Université de Sherbrooke.
"Dr. Martin's specialties offer immense expertise which will help us to better serve our patients, providing them with top-notch health care services," said Dr. Édouard Hendriks, Vice President of Medical Affairs for Regional Health Authority B.
As Medical Director for the new Provincial Trauma Program, Dr. Martin will work toward developing and implementing a well integrated and coordinated trauma system. This will be done by working closely with both regional health authorities, as well as the province's medical schools.
Aside from his work within the province, it will be Dr. Martin's responsibility to collaborate with other tertiary care programs throughout the surrounding areas. While Dr. Martin will be based out of Saint John, his role is provincial and he will be traveling extensively across New Brunswick, meeting with key stakeholders throughout the province.
