Albert County Health and Wellness Centre brings community together

(Moncton) September 21, 2009 - The Albert County Health and Wellness Centre, part of Regional Health Authority (RHA) B, has recently been awarded funding from the United Way of Greater Moncton United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern NB Region Inc to help mobilize and engage the community of Albert County.

Rhonda Hamilton, who works in Community Outreach and Program Planning and Coordination at the centre, along with various other community partners, have embarked on organizing a two-day workshop that will help those attending to connect with and care for the community around them.

Background Information:

Asset-Based Community Development Institute

The Asset-Based Community Development Institute is located at the School of Education and Social Policy at Northwestern University. ABCD has a staff of four individuals working at the university, including founders, John McKnight and Jody Kretzmann.

Building community capacity is at the heart of ABCD's work. ABCD engages directly with community groups to support their asset-based community development efforts. The Institute and its affiliated faculty also participate in an array of local, regional, and international conferences and workshops as keynote speakers, workshop and training facilitators, technical support providers, and learning participants. Using a community-based participatory research approach, ABCD partners with community residents and other local entities to conduct research that helps prepare them to achieve their own community building objectives.
"The Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) Workshop, being held on September 22 and 23 will help bring together the community in Albert County. Not only will it help us approach community development in a new way, but will help us discover our resources and how to leverage them," said Hamilton.

Affiliated with the ABCD Institute, the workshop will be delivered by Mike Green, a Social Worker from Denver, Colorado who teaches and consults internationally.

"We're very excited to have Mike joining us to share his insight and knowledge. We're hoping that he can help us build on the great things that already exist in our community, and build strong relationships among the community contributors," said Hamilton.

In relation to health care, this workshop will allow all involved to help their community endorse and encourage health promotion and prevention.

"Community development is a key factor in primary health care. Future sustainability of health care in Canada depends on local people working together for the well-being of their community," said Hamilton.

The two-day workshop will take place in the Hopewell Cape Community Hall, and 55 attendees will be chosen to take part by Albert County Community Members, in consultation with local Municipalities: Hillsborough, Riverside-Albert, and Alma.

"We just really want our community to become empowered to solve their own problems, especially the determinants of health such as poverty, literacy, culture, and healthy child development. I think the workshop will certainly help everyone better understand how to do this," said Hamilton.
