The Moncton Hospital new ER and trauma department to open Friday, October 2

(MONCTON) September 15, 2009 - A modern and expanded emergency and trauma department at The Moncton Hospital is opening its doors and will be fully operational at 12:01 a.m., Friday, October 2.

Health Minister Mary Schryer and Supply and Services Minister Ed Doherty toured the new facility today with The Moncton Hospital staff members and senior officials from Regional Health Authority B.

"The new emergency and trauma department is part of a new $47-million ambulatory care centre addition to The Moncton Hospital, which includes a state-of-the-art laboratory, a new ambulance entrance, and underground parking," said Minister Schryer.

"This new facility will significantly improve health care services by offering patients a modern facility with the latest equipment and design."

The $47-million project represents the largest capital investment in The Moncton Hospital since it was built over 50 years ago.

"Bringing this project to fruition required the collaboration of countless individuals during the planning, design, and construction phases," stated Supply and Services Minister Dr. Ed Doherty.

"I am very pleased to see that those efforts have resulted in a state-of-the-art facility that will enhance the provision of health care to New Brunswickers."

In addition to serving patients from the Greater Moncton area and all of New Brunswick, The Moncton Hospital is also part of the provincial trauma network, and an important referral centre for patients from Prince Edward Island and Northern Nova Scotia.

The new expanded emergency room and trauma department has been designed to improve the provision of patient care.

"The completion of this extension to The Moncton Hospital is exciting not only for our health authority, but for the community we serve. We're truly excited to unveil the new enlarged and updated emergency and trauma department. It will certainly enhance the level of health care we deliver," said Donald J. Peters, President and CEO of Regional Health Authority B (RHA B).

The physical improvements to the department and the acquisition of new equipment and technology will not only enhance healthcare delivery, but will enable dedicated health care providers to better serve their patients.

"We are grateful to the community for their support in helping to make this new emergency and trauma department a reality," said David Holt, Vice Chair of The Friends of The Moncton Hospital Foundation.

A portion of the $7.5 million raised through the Foundation's Healthy Returns Capital Campaign funded equipment for the department.

The new emergency and trauma department is located in the new extension to The Moncton Hospital. It will continue to be accessed from MacBeath Ave. A parking lot accommodating approximately 25 vehicles is available for emergency patients.
