(Saint John) June 15, 2009 - Physician recruitment, scheduling, and staffing are the top priorities for Dr. Michael Howlett, the new acting Clinical Department Head of Emergency Medicine for the Saint John Regional Hospital.
"We are very excited for Dr. Howlett to join our medical team. He brings to the role a wealth of knowledge and experience in emergency medicine," said Dr. Édouard Hendriks, VP of Medical Affairs for Regional Health Authority B (RHA B).
Dr. Howlett's mandate will be to ensure that the clinical and academic responsibilities of the emergency department will be fulfilled and long term stability will be achieved.
"When we reorganize physician scheduling and workload in the emergency department we anticipate very good physician recruitment success. We believe we have many important features to attract physicians, like interesting clinical work, a trauma centre, the possibility to be involved in teaching, a new emergency room that will open soon, and many more," said Dr. Hendriks.
"As the acting Clinical Department Head of Emergency Medicine my first priority is high quality patient care. To achieve this I will work toward ensuring proper coverage of the emergency department, as well as ongoing emergency physician recruitment and retention initiatives," said Dr. Howlett.
Dr. Howlett practiced as a family physician before becoming a full-time emergency medicine specialist. He has held the role of Chief of Emergency Medicine at Colchester East Hants Health Authority in Truro, Nova Scotia since 1994, and is a member of Dalhousie University's Emergency Medicine faculty.
"We've always had very strong physicians in this position, and would like to thank Dr. John Dornan for his commitment and dedication in this role," said Dr. Hendriks.
