Emergency physicians presented with Academic Funding Plan Proposal

June 22, 2009 - Emergency Department (ED) physicians at the Saint John Regional Hospital and urgent care centre at St. Joseph's Hospital were presented with an Academic Funding Plan (AFP) late Friday.

Developed by Regional Health Authority (RHA) B, the Government of New Brunswick and Dalhousie University, the AFP covers clinical pay and pay for non-clinical activities such as teaching, research and administration.

"The results of such collaborative efforts help bring our province closer to achieving our objective of a stronger and sustainable health-care system," said Health Minister Mary Schryer.

"We're very pleased to have been presented with the package," says Dr. John Dornan, Saint John's acting head of emergency medicine. "The contract appears attractive, competitive, and respectful and could be a tremendous help in our retention and recruitment efforts. I'm confident it could provide stability in the ED for years to come."

Dr. Édouard Hendriks, Vice President of Medical Affairs for Regional Health Authority B, says that the pending agreement is a huge step in the right direction. "Delivering the best possible patient care is a priority for Regional Health Authority B. The AFP may provide our ED physicians with the resources they need to work on the clinical and non-clinical activities they do to continuously improve the level of care we offer."

Dornan says that, while the AFP will make it more attractive for physicians to be in New Brunswick, recruitment won't happen over night.

"Physician recruitment is a team effort and it takes time," says Dornan. "Staff know this and I commend them on the dedication and commitment they've shown to helping us maintain the quality of care we offer patients. It's important for us to also recognize support offered by the Government of New Brunswick, the Regional Health Authority, ED nursing staff and other NB doctors in helping us provide the best possible care by bringing the proposal to the table."

The AFP is currently being reviewed by lawyers. Further details are being withheld until all parties have had a chance to sign the agreement.
