Moncton, N.B. (May 13, 2009) - Today marks the 10th anniversary of the Northumberland Family Practice Teaching Program at The Moncton Hospital. The program, initiated in 1999, is a satellite site of Dalhousie University's Family Medicine program which trains family physicians.
"The Northumberland Family Practice Teaching Program began as a result of the efforts of a group of enthusiastic family and specialist physicians who were eager to teach and to recruit new family physicians to Moncton and surrounding areas," says Dr. Karlyne Dufour, Site Director of the Northumberland Family Practice Teaching Program. She says the program has evolved over the past ten years from training three residents per year, to having seven family physicians graduate each year. Three of this year's graduates will be starting their practices in Moncton.
"We are very proud of this Program and the benefits it has brought not only to Moncton but also for the province of New Brunswick and Atlantic Canada," says Donald J. Peters, President and CEO of Regional Health Authority B. "The program has assisted in retaining current physicians by providing them with an opportunity to teach medical students." He says residents at the Northumberland Unit consistently praise the collegial teaching environment at The Moncton Hospital, the friendly and helpful hospital staff and the great community.
Health Minister Michael Murphy said the Northumberland Family Practice Teaching Program will be involved in the Dalhousie medical education program that will be based at UNB Saint John, with the first group of medical education students beginning training in the fall of 2010.
"Once New Brunswick medical students receive their first two years of training at UNB Saint John, they will be coming to Moncton and to other locations around their province to complete their education," he said. "So as we celebrate today the first 10 years of the Northumberland Family Practice Teaching Program, let's also look ahead to the future with the certainty this program will continue to play a major role in the training, recruitment and retention of family physicians for many years to come."
Physicians and residents of the program celebrated the anniversary with various activities throughout the week. Dr Dufour says similar units exist in Halifax, Sydney, Saint John and Fredericton and Charlottetown is opening a Unit this summer. "Representatives from these teaching sites meet regularly to administer the program, and to ensure that family medicine residents at all sites receive equivalent educational experiences." She says those involved in the program are pleased with their accomplishments and look forward to continuing the commitment to and enhancement of, the Role of Family Medicine in hospital-based care, and in the community.
