FREDERICTON – Donald J. Peters, President and CEO of Regional Health Authority B, announced today that Dr. Tom Barry of Fredericton has been appointed Chief of Staff of RHA B by the organization’s new board of directors. He will assume the role with over 30 years of clinical and administrative experience.
"We are pleased to welcome Dr. Barry and we look forward to working with him in the years to come," said Mr. Peters. "I am certain that his experience, skills and excellent reputation will serve us well in achieving our goal of establishing a sustainable health care system for New Brunswick."
Upon graduating from Dalhousie University Medical School in 1974, Dr. Barry served with the Volunteer Medical Service in Papua, New Guinea from 1975-1977. He completed one year of an internal medicine residency in 1978, received his certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada in 1981 and was awarded a Fellowship in 1997.
From 1978-87, Dr. Barry operated a practice in Marysville, New Brunswick. He moved his practice to New Maryland in 1987, where he continues to see patients today. He has also worked in Obstetrics and the Emergency Department at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. Dr. Barry was the Chief of Family Practice for River Valley Health from 2005-2008.
Dr. Barry is looking forward to his new role "It is a privilege for me to be nominated by my colleagues and to be able to take part in the restructuring of the New Brunswick health-care system. My belief is that this initiative is an opportunity for MDs to become more involved and to have a voice in providing the best care possible for our patients."
In addition to a broad medical background, Dr. Barry's strong collaborative and conflict-resolution skills have made him a valued member of several professional committees and boards, including with the N.B. Medical Society, the Canadian Medical Association, the New Brunswick Extra-Mural Program and the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital.
Dr. Barry will continue to see patients in his private practice. His five-year term as Chief of Staff began on September 1.
